The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent raid on the Labour House, the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by security operatives.

The raid, which reportedly involved the confiscation of books from the NLC library, was allegedly conducted in search of materials related to the “#EndBadGovernance” campaign.

In a press release authored by its President, Comrade Festus Osifo, TUC described the invasion as a grave violation of fundamental rights, particularly the freedoms of speech and expression. The organization argued that such actions threaten the democratic principles of peaceful dissent and free expression, crucial elements in a democratic society.

Osifo also demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. He called on the Federal Government to hold accountable those responsible for authorising and executing the raid.

Additionally, Osifo demanded the prompt return of all confiscated materials and an official explanation for what he termed as an unjustified action.

“The invasion represents an overreach by security forces and poses a direct threat to the rights of Nigerian citizens,” Osifo said. “We must ensure that our rights are protected and that security agencies operate within the legal boundaries set by our Constitution.”

TUC also expressed concerns over the growing state of civil liberties and the role of security agencies in Nigeria.
