The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be deepening as concerns over an impending wave of defections have taken center stage.
Ikenga Ugochinyere, a federal lawmaker representing Ideato federal constituency in Imo State, has raised the alarm over the possibility of two more governors and as many as 40 lawmakers abandoning the party in the coming days.

Speaking to party members on Friday Ugochinyere expressed dismay at the state of the PDP, warning that unless immediate action is taken by the National Working Committee (NWC), the situation could spiral into irreversible collapse.

He blamed poor leadership and internal betrayal as major contributors to the party’s troubles and called on the NWC to assert authority in salvaging what is left.
He specifically pointed to the controversial removal of Umar Damagum as acting National Chairman and the continued stay of National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, whom he accused of working against the party’s interest.
Ugochinyere insisted that the only way to avoid a full-scale implosion is for the leadership to reconvene and take decisive action to restore order and unity.
“This is not difficult for the NWC, do this before what is left goes away… Are you people not men? Somebody has vowed to bury the party and you have not done anything,” he said, referencing the urgency of the matter.
His warning follows recent defections by high-profile figures, including former Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who have moved to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As tensions rise, political watchers say the next few weeks may prove critical in determining the future of Nigeria’s main opposition party.
