Two commercial motorcyclists popularly known as okada riders lost their lives in a road accident that occurred along Agbaluku road in Arigidi-Akoko, Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State on Thursday. Also, a 30-year-old motorcyclist identified as Edoja Ediri was murdered by unknown persons at Oviri-Ogor community in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
City Round gathered that the two okada riders in Ondo had a head on collision, resulting in instant death.
An eyewitness told one of our correspondents that the riders attempted to overtake a school bus and in the process, hit another okada rider coming from the opposite direction of the road.
The eyewitness said, “The accident was caused by reckless driving. There have been cases of road accidents in the Agbaluku axis of the road to Ajowa Akoko. Many drivers drive recklessly without caution because the road is good. This is bad.”
In a reaction, the Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ikare Akoko, Mr Ade Alabi, attributed the cause of the accident to recklessness and lack of patience.
He called on the commercial motorcyclists in the area to always use helmets, saying the two casualties suffered head injuries.
It was gathered that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of a hospital in the area.
In the Delta incident, City Round learnt that the motorcyclist’s attackers also made away with his motorcycle. It was further gathered that the body and helmet of the rider who hailed from neighbouring Igbuku-Orogun were found in an uncompleted building in the area with his hands and legs tied. The incident drew surprise in the agrarian community.
One of the villagers who spoke on condition of anonymity accused security agents in the area of alleged inaction over the incident.
The villager said, “We rushed to inform the leadership of the community that contacted the police from Ughelli ‘A’ Division in the afternoon. It took the police over four hours to evacuate the deceased with the excuses that they lacked.’’
When contacted, the acting state police spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident saying “there were marks of violence on his (deceased) face and legs. His corpse was found and we were informed about it and we went there. I don’t know if the person is an okada rider or not because nobody has actually come up with to identify the person.’’
