The directive by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for its members to join the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) was not observed by lecturers at the University of Abuja on Tuesday, the Nigerian Tribune can report.
The nationwide strike, which commenced on Tuesday, also recorded partial compliance at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.
The strike was declared in protest of the recent assault on NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who was assaulted in Imo State.
ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, while directing members of the Union to join the strike, said that the strike is necessary to “protect the interests of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the Union.”
“Zonal Coordinators and Branch Chairpersons should immediately mobilise our members to participate in the action,” Osodeke added.
At the University of Abuja, just like many other universities across the country, there was no compliance with the directive of ASUU leadership.
A senior staff member of the university told the Nigerian Tribune in confidence that UniAbuja is not on any solidarity strike, saying the school is full and bustling with academic and other activities.
“The school is full, and all the staff are here going about their normal business. And there is no staff in the registry; as far as I’m concerned, that is not here, because ordinarily, that is where you are supposed to have a greater number of staff who are members of the union.
“Lecturers are teaching and doing supervision, and you can see students very busy with their academic activities,” the source said.
