The College of Health Sciences at the University of Abuja has entered into a developmental partnership with Alliance Hospital, Abuja, in a significant move to enhance healthcare education and services at the university.

While receiving the Chief Medical Director of Alliance Hospital, Dr. Chris Otabor, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Titus Ibekwe, noted that this partnership marks a major milestone for the institution.

“Today is a special day for our college. Dr. Chris Otabor, a renowned medical doctor and alumnus, has generously offered to give back to society, demonstrating a commitment to his roots and community.”

Professor Ibekwe praised Dr. Otabor’s initiative, stating, “His willingness to support our institution is a testament to the power of private collaboration in achieving our goals. We are grateful for his commitment to enhancing healthcare education and services in Nigeria.”

“The partnership aims to address critical needs in healthcare education and service delivery, tackling brain drain and promoting reverse brain drain. Some individuals have chosen to stay and transform the system.”

The Provost also mentioned that the College of Health Sciences focuses on three key areas: teaching, research, and service delivery.

“We are internationally recognized, with world-class staff members,” Professor Ibekwe added.

He emphasized that the college cannot rely solely on government funding, adding that private partnerships like this one are essential for growth and development.

“We encourage other philanthropists and public-spirited individuals to invest in medical education.”

“The benefits of this partnership extend beyond the college, positively impacting the broader healthcare landscape in Nigeria.”

“Quality healthcare education is crucial for addressing critical health issues,” Professor Ibekwe stressed.

He expressed gratitude to Alliance Hospital and Dr. Otabor, stating, “We appreciate their support and look forward to a fruitful collaboration.

“This partnership will enhance healthcare education, research, and services in Nigeria, benefiting both the medical community and the nation at large.”

In his remarks, the CMD of Alliance Hospital, Dr. Christopher Otabor, addressed the college’s urgent need to upscale its faculty, as it currently trains only 75 doctors annually.

He noted that this number must increase to address the brain drain of Nigerian medical graduates traveling abroad.

“The college requires infrastructure upgrades to accommodate more students and secure accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council.

“Specifically, the college needs to expand its laboratories, including the anatomy and histology labs, to provide adequate space for medical students.”

Dr. Otabor also disclosed that the auditorium requires furnishings to create a conducive learning environment, while the provost’s office needs upgrading.

“Reliable air conditioning and power supply systems are essential to ensure comfortable and uninterrupted learning.”

“To achieve this, private sector involvement is crucial, as government funding alone is insufficient.

“Nigeria’s wealthy individuals and billionaires should invest in medical education, emulating the philanthropic efforts seen in other countries.

“By supporting the college, we can empower more students to become doctors and drive progress in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Financial assistance for indigent students with high academic potential is also vital, ensuring that no talented individual is denied the opportunity to become a doctor due to financial constraints.”

“Professor Ibekwe’s vision for the college aligns with the national goal of improving healthcare delivery. His pragmatic leadership and commitment to excellence make him an ideal partner for this initiative.”

“The partnership will not only benefit the college but also contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“A well-equipped and staffed medical school will attract top talent, retain skilled professionals, and provide quality healthcare services to the community.”

“In the coming months, we plan to work closely with Professor Ibekwe and his team to implement the necessary upgrades and support systems. We invite like-minded individuals and organizations to join us in this endeavor.”

“Together, we can make a meaningful difference in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape and create a brighter future for generations to come.

“By investing in medical education, we are investing in the very fabric of our society. I urge others to join me in supporting this noble cause and empowering the next generation of medical professionals.”

“With collective effort and commitment, we can overcome the challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare system and build a better tomorrow for all,” he said.
