In a statement, Ambassador Mills Jr. commended the people of Edo State for the largely peaceful conduct of the gubernatorial elections held on September 21.

He specifically praised Governor Obaseki’s appeal for peace and emphasised the importance of transparency and due process in maintaining public confidence in democratic systems.

“We commend Governor Obaseki’s appeal for peace and urge all stakeholders, including INEC, to support established electoral processes and respect legal procedures to challenge results,” Ambassador Mills Jr. stated.

He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria, adding that the U.S. will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Ambassador Mills Jr.’s call for electoral integrity comes as INEC continues to work towards strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process. Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu has emphasised the need for impartiality, transparency, and courage in managing elections.

The Edo State governorship election serves as a crucial test for Nigeria’s democratic progress, with international observers closely watching the outcome.
