The Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), in collaboration with the Taraba State Agency for Mass Education, graduated the first set of adult literacy classes in Taraba on Thursday.
Dr Augustina Godwin, Taraba State Commissioner for Education, while commending the VCDP and the agency for their decision to ensure adult literacy in Taraba, described education as the bedrock of socio-economic development in every progressive-minded society.
The commissioner, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry of education in Taraba, Alhaji Idris Goje, noted during the event in Jalingo that the Value Chain Developments programme and the State Agency for Mass Education’s idea to ensure adult literacy were a boost to Governor Agbu Kefas’s education revolution agenda.
Alhaji Goje, on behalf of the commissioner, appealed for the sustainability of the programme, as its contributions are life-changing and capable of eradicating poverty in the state
“I salute your initiative to educate the adults in Taraba. This idea is a boost to Governor Agbu Kefas’s education revolution agenda for Taraba, and I encouraged the graduates not to relent but to continue with their educational pursuits.
“I wish to appeal for the sustainability of this programme since its contributions are capable of eradicating poverty in Taraba.”. The commissioner noted.
Earlier, Dr Fatima Aliyu, the programme national coordinator, disclosed, while delivering her welcome address, that VCDP not only supported agricultural production but also carried out programmes to empower women and youth in the state.
Aliyu, who was represented by Dr Musa Dalang, also noted that the VCDP found it necessary to sensitise and encourage adults to acquire adult literacy since it will broaden their knowledge of activities and programmes of the Value Chain Development Programme and also help them gain more knowledge of happenings in society.
Meanwhile, the state commissioner for agriculture and food security, Prof. Nicholas Namessan, represented by the State VCDP project coordinator, Mr Irimiya Musa, as well as the executive secretary of the Taraba State Mass Education Board, Mr Obadiah Andrew, both expressed that literacy is not limited to educating the people on the unique tool of how to read and write but also comprises societal development knowledge acquisition.
They called on the general public who cannot read and write in Hausa and English to avail themselves of vocational and functional skills training provided by the programme.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that 70 participants from the Howai VCDP adult literacy centre and the Wuro serve VCDP literacy centre graduated from the adult literacy school in Taraba, which started in 2022.
