A vigilante member, who was attempting to prevent hoodlums from scavenging disposed frozen turkey in the Epe area of Lagos State, has succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack at the dump site.
The deceased, identified simply as Oluwafemi, a member of the Ibile Vigilante in Epe, was assaulted by the hoodlums last Friday and passed away three days later.
In a related incident, the Lagos State Police have launched investigations into the death of a 19-year-old boy who was fatally injured with a shovel.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed both incidents to the Nigerian Tribune.
He reported that fourteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of the vigilante member, while a manhunt is underway for the boy’s killer, who is on the run.
Hundeyin detailed, “On 15/07/2024 at about 16:30 hours, a report was received at Epe division that on 12/07/2024 at about 14:00 hours, an Ibile Vigilante member, one Oluwafemi, aged 45, was attacked by hoodlums at a refuse site in Afero Village, Epe, while dissuading miscreants from picking disposed frozen turkey from the dump site.”
“He sustained injuries on his left leg and back of his waist and was rushed to Epe General Hospital, where he was treated and discharged,” the Lagos Police spokesperson continued. “But on July 15, 2024, at about 14:30 hours, his condition relapsed, and he was taken back to the hospital.”
According to the police, “Doctors on duty battled to save his life, but unfortunately, he gave up the ghost.”
The Lagos Police image maker added, “His corpse has been deposited in the mortuary, and two additional suspects have been apprehended, bringing the total to fourteen, with twelve already handed over to the Task Force on July 13, 2024.”
In another incident, an undisclosed woman reported to the Alagbado police station that her former husband beat her son with a shovel, inflicting a serious injury that eventually led to his death.
Hundeyin, speaking on the incident, said, “She reported that on 05/07/2024, at about 14:00 hours, her ex-husband, one Olamide Amusan, gave his son, Adeyemi Amusan, aged 19, a deep cut under moderate correction on his right hand with a shovel, causing a serious injury.”
The police image maker also stated, “He was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment, but when the injury became serious, he was taken to General Hospital, Ikeja, where he gave up the ghost as a result of the tetanus infection, as confirmed by the doctor on duty.”
He added, “The scene was visited by detectives of the division.”
Hundeyin, a Superintendent of Police, stated, “However, the suspect is currently at large. The case is under investigation.”
