The management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has debunked the claim by some sections of Nigerian media that it has newly introduced a resit examination to be conducted between January and February for candidates who may need make-up papers in their senior school certificate examination (WASSCE).

The organisation said the report did not emanate from Nigeria and it is not meant for Nigerian candidates but originated from Ghana and for Ghanaian candidates.

In the viral report, the WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, who was quoted as a source of the story is a Ghanaian working for the Ghana office of WAEC.

Tribune Online reports that WAEC Nigeria has introduced the first series of its own exam for private candidates(which Ghana has just introduced this year) since 2017 during the administration of Mr Olu Adenipekun as the Head of the National Office.

Olu’s Adenipekun successor, Patrick Areghan who has also retired from service two years ago has also upheld the format and also the current HNO, Dr Amos Dangut.

So, this series of exams makes the organisation’s yearly examination diets (and not a resit) in Nigeria to be three as the other two are the aged-long MayJune WASSCE for the school-based candidates and the NovemberDecember exam (formerly known as GCE) for private candidates.

Confirming to Tribune Online that the report was not for Nigerian audiences, the head of the Public Affairs unit of WAEC Nigeria, Mrs Moyosola Adesina, said the story is misleading as it is not for Nigerian candidates.

She said the first series of the WASSCE diet for private candidates which has been on for some years is usually held between February and March has not changed as the organisation is prepared to conduct this year’s edition as scheduled.
