The Abdullah Saeed-led Oyo State Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that within the first quarter of the year, that is between January and March, it has arrested 56 suspects for various drug offences, including dealing in cannabis, Tramadol, Diazepam, Rohypnol, Colorado, codeine and other psychotropic substances.
The 56 suspects comprised 49 males and seven females within the age range of 16 to 60.
Making this known on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Mutiat Okuwobi, said that the seizure of cannabis and other narcotic and psychotropic substances during the period under review totalled 235.89 kilogrammes.
According to Okuwobi, “within the same period, 18 suspects were convicted for various drug offences, with jail terms ranging from six months to 10 years imprisonment.
“Also, the Command gave brief interventions through counselling to 21 Persons Who Use Drugs (PWUD).
“Additionally, seven persons were rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society.”
She stated further that the command carried out some sensitisation lectures at 49 locations across the state, and featured on 13 radio programmes where drug abuse and its consequences were discussed.
The command’s spokeswoman said that the state commander, Saeed, advised the general public to be watchful and give necessary and timely information on drugs to NDLEA to enable it to take appropriate actions at the right time.
He also called on well-meaning members of the society to assist in building a befitting facility for more effective rehabilitation and treatment of drug-dependent persons in the state.
