Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured teachers in the state that his administration is committed to implementing the N70,000 minimum wage.
Speaking on Saturday during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Ibadan, Makinde addressed members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), pledging his government’s readiness to prioritize their welfare.
The governor revealed that negotiations for the consequential adjustment of the new minimum wage would begin in the coming week.
He said, ”We’ll pay minimum wage. We will pay N70,000, but the consequential arrangement would have to be negotiated.That’s why NLC and their team would seat down.”
He also announced a three-month extension of the wage award payment, from October to December, while emphasizing that the new minimum wage will be implemented once discussions are concluded.
“I have actually extended the wage award by three months, and if the negotiations are completed within this time, we will transition directly to paying the N70,000 minimum wage,” he said.

Makinde acknowledged the critical role of teachers in nation-building and reiterated his administration’s dedication to supporting their welfare.
He noted that for any country to progress, its citizens must be well-educated, and teachers are key drivers in achieving this goal.
In response, the state NUT chairman, Raji Oladimeji, commended the governor for his efforts toward improving teachers’ welfare and urged him to expedite the ongoing recruitment of teachers to fill classroom vacancies.
Oladimeji praised Makinde’s commitment and urged him to continue prioritizing the needs of teachers for the betterment of Oyo State’s education sector.
