The Bauchi State House of Assembly has affirmed its commitment to prioritizing agriculture in a bid to tackle food insecurity and poverty among the state’s populace.
This announcement was made by the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon Abubakar Y Suleiman, during an advocacy visit by members of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Oxfam.
The advocacy visit aimed to advance the improvement of extension services for small-scale farmers and gender-responsive agricultural policies on the political agenda.
Speaking on the significance of agriculture in eradicating poverty, the Speaker stressed the importance of extension services in modern and mechanized farming.
He lauded CISLAC for choosing advocacy in agriculture, describing it as a significant step towards poverty reduction in the state.
The Speaker assured the Center of continued cooperation from the Assembly and an open-door policy. He also pledged to appeal to the Executive Arm on the need to absorb agricultural extension workers trained in Abuja.
The Director of CISLAC, Auwal Ibrahim Musa, who was represented by Muhammad Murtala, stated that the visit was aimed at advancing improvement in extension services for small-scale farmers and gender-responsive policies in agriculture.
He also disclosed that the organization, with support from Oxfam, advocated for promoting fairer and more resilient food systems that improve the livelihood of women and men small-scale producers in Bauchi and Gombe States.
Musa noted that CISLAC had previously met with the Honourable Members of the House, and commitments were made to expand the extension service programme in the State.
These commitments included the reintegration of the Bauchi State extension service trainees from the Federal Capital Territory and supporting extension service delivery through budgetary considerations within the State’s budget review.
The Director added that engagements with relevant returning and incoming state actors were imperative, particularly for women small-scale producers.
The visit also sought the Honourable House’s support in achieving the objectives of advancing opportunities to effectively implement agricultural development programmes.
This includes the adoption and domestication of the National Agricultural Extension Policy as a veritable mechanism for improving the delivery and provision of agricultural extension services to small-holder women and men farmers.
The organization also requested an improvement in budgetary allocations to support the effective and sustainable implementation of policies, programmes, and extension services to women and men small-scale producers in the State.
