Grief is a natural and universal response to loss. Whether it is the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or even the loss of a job, grief often overwhelms individuals, leaving them grappling with emotions that seem impossible to manage. What makes grief particularly challenging is its profound impact on mental health. While it is essential to acknowledge that grief is deeply personal and manifests differently in each person, it is crucial to understand how it can lead to mental health struggles if left unchecked. When we lose someone or something we deeply care about, it is normal to feel sadness, anger, or even guilt. However, for some, these emotions can escalate into more severe health conditions.

A particularly tragic example is the recent incident in Nigeria, where 35 children lost their lives in a stampede at an event organized by a philanthropist to feed 5,000 children. The program, which aimed to provide hope and relief, ended in heartbreak. The grief of the mothers and families who lost their children will undoubtedly be profound. For many, this loss will be accompanied by trauma, shock, and a lingering sense of helplessness. The pain of losing a child is unimaginable, and when compounded by the circumstances of a tragic event, it often leads to an even deeper psychological wound.

Sometimes grief can be accompanied by guilt. Many grieving individuals find themselves asking, “What if I had done something differently?” or “Could I have prevented this?” Such thoughts can weigh heavily on the mind, making the grieving process even more challenging. For instance, the mothers of the children who died in the stampede may feel guilty, wondering if there was something they could have done to protect their children. The organizer may question whether certain safety measures could have prevented the tragedy. However, it is essential to understand that grief is not about blame, it is about loss and the overwhelming pain that follows.

A similar story illustrates this guilt. A mother had a neighbour who regularly drove her only child to school along with the neighbour’s two children. One tragic day, after dropping the children at school, this neighbour’s only child forgot his lunch bag and returned to the car to retrieve it. Tragically, he picked the bag and became trapped in the locked car with its windows wound up and couldn’t come out. Hours later, he was found unresponsive and, despite being rushed to the hospital, it was too late. For the grieving mother, the guilt was immense. She blamed herself for not taking her child to school herself, even though entrusting her child to a helpful neighbour had always been a reasonable and thoughtful arrangement. Grief, however, can amplify self-blame and make it difficult to see beyond the pain.

This highlights how grief can sometimes lead individuals to dwell on what might have been done differently, which can deepen the pain of the loss. If the program held for the 5000 children had gone as planned, it would have been celebrated. Similarly, the neighbour helping with school runs was an act of kindness. Tragedy, however, turns good intentions into sources of heartache. It is essential to remember that holding onto guilt only prolongs suffering and hinders healing. Moving forward, no matter how painful, is vital.

Acceptance is one of the hardest aspects of grief. Many people struggle with the notion of “moving on” or “letting go,” as it feels like a betrayal of the love and memories tied to the loss. However, accepting grief is not about forgetting or diminishing the importance of what has been lost. It is about learning to live with the pain and eventually finding a way to continue living despite it. Acceptance may feel like an impossible task, but it is a crucial step in the healing process.

Healing from grief is not a straightforward journey, but it is possible with the right support. It is important for those experiencing grief to understand that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a necessary step toward recovery.

Unresolved grief can lead to serious complications. The emotional toll can affect physical and mental health such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prolonged grief often brings about a deep sense of despair that affects day-to-day functioning.  A person may struggle to get out of bed, go to work, or even engage in meaningful interactions with others. The overwhelming thought of facing life without what has been lost can leave them disconnected from the world.

Productivity may decline and relationships can suffer. While crying and venting are healthy ways to process emotions, grief that lingers beyond what is manageable may require professional intervention.

A poignant example is the story of a young woman who lost her husband less than a year after their marriage. With no children before his death, she resolved never to remarry, despite encouragement from her family and friends. For over two decades, she remained deeply entrenched in her grief, unable to move forward. Such a situation highlights the need for help, as unresolved grief can result in a lifetime of missed opportunities and emotional stagnation.

For others, grief can push them toward even darker paths, such as considering self-harm, which creates ripples of pain among family and friends. Grief is an undeniable part of life, but addressing it and finding a way forward is essential for both mental and physical well-being. Accepting loss and seeking help when necessary can pave the way for healing and a renewed sense of purpose.

Grief can be a lonely journey, but no one has to walk it alone. As difficult as it may seem, there is always a silver lining in the sky, no matter how dark. It is a reminder that even in our most trying moments, hope persists, and brighter days lie ahead. The dark clouds of loss may linger, but with time and support, rays of hope can break through.

In the next edition, we will delve into the consequences of unresolved grief and explore strategies for coping and moving forward. Life may not always be fair, but it offers opportunities to heal, grow, and rediscover purpose even in the face of adversity.
