Amidst the call for the removal of two-term Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Tajudeen Yusuf, has said agitation against the former governor was self-serving.

Yusuf, who represented Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the House of Representatives, in a statement on Friday, urged Abuja residents and stakeholders to rally behind Wike in his efforts to restore the lost glory of the FCT.

The former lawmaker, who described Wike as a cosmopolitan politician, said his governance process has endeared him to all who want the best for the FCT.

According to him, “being widely acknowledged as a dynamic ‘Mr Projects’ and the manifest potential for record-breaking, people-focused developmental achievements are genuine reasons for all stakeholders to support Nyesom Wike’s vision for a transformed Abuja by disregarding distractions posed by fringe protests and baseless propaganda.

“In no time, Nyesom Wike has exponentially boosted the FCT’s internal revenue base, commenced major infrastructural development projects, including massive road rehabilitation and reforms within the Federal Capital Development Authority, and life is being breathed into long abandoned projects of all types towards serving Nigerians better.

“Commendably, the strategic Apo-Wasa road, which is expected to make life easier for FCT residents by linking up new areas including Apo, Wasa district, Kuje town, and the other side of Gwagwalada, is now one of the projects targeted for completion by May 29 next year; the project was awarded by the FCT in 2017 with a completion period of twelve months.

“The 560-foot Millennium Tower and Cultural Centre, along with adjoining structures conceptualised in 2005 under the Olusegun Obasanjo-led administration and scheduled for completion by 2011, was only 38% completed in 2017 and in 2022, Information Minister Lai Mohammed said that government was looking for $400 million private sector investment to complete it but current FCT minister Nyesom Wike has however promised to complete the project within two years as one of the legacy projects of the Tinubu administration.’

Yusuf noted that ‘it is very heartwarming that within a few months, through his effective and people-focused, development-driven leadership, abandoned projects are coming back to life and there is an on-going resurfacing and rehabilitation of roads in Garki, Wuse, Maitama, and Asokoro Districts.

He added that the “majority of damaged street lights and traffic lights are now functional, revenue generation by the Abuja Geographic Information System and other agencies have dramatically increased and life is getting better with projects and inclusivity that impact all six area councils of FCT. “
