A member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Remi Oseni, has described youth negativity as part of the challenges facing the country.
Honourable Oseni stated this at the weekend during the First Ido Youth Summit, organized by the Remi Oseni Committee of Friends (ROCOF) in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State With the theme, ‘Pathway to Positivity: The Nigerian Youth I Would Like to See,’ the lawmaker said the potential of the Nigerian youth is staggering.
“Statistics tell us that over 60 percent of Nigeria’s population is under the age of 25. This statistic is not merely a number; it represents cultivated minds, untapped, that can drive innovation and uplift communities.
“The youth of today possess the vigour, creativity, and tech-savvy capabilities necessary to navigate a rapidly changing global landscape. However, with such power comes with the significant responsibility to be agents of positive change.”
He, however, lamented that numerous challenges threaten to overshadow that potential, adding that these are issues government must focus on.
He said: “In Nigeria, youth negativity often stems from unemployment, lack of access to quality Education, and political instability.
“Research indicates that over 40 per cent of Nigerian youths are unemployed, leading to feelings of hopelessness and increased crime rates. Additionally, mental health issues are rising, with about 25per cent of youths under stress and anxiety.
“These factors contribute to a cycle of despair, hindering personal growth and national development while exacerbating social unrest and migration trends among the youth seeking better opportunities abroad.”
He, therefore, charged youths to imbibe positive mindset, which he described as intentional.
“This is a choice to see beyond the immediate and optimistic belief in a brighter future. The Nigerian youth I envision are not merely passive recipients of their circumstances; they are active participants in their destinies. By fostering a culture of positivity, we will be equipping our youth with the tools to navigate obstacles rather than be defined by them,” Honourable Oseni said.
In his address the Coordinator, Ido Youth Summit Committee, Engineer Ayo Mowemi stated that the summit is organised to inspire youths to take action and bring about positive change in society.
He added that the event also aims to inspire youths to tap into their natural qualities including ambition, enthusiasm, and energy to bring about positive change in future elections.
As the saying goes “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a pace “. Today we take the first step towards creating a better future for ourselves and our community. We are excited to launch the “GRO Oyo state 2027 “initiative, which aimed to build a movement of youths who will work together to achieve our collective goals,” he said.
