The concerned people of the Zamfara North Senatorial District have begun preparations for the possible recall of Senator Sahabi Alhaji Yau. Collection of signatures has started, with constituents expressing dissatisfaction with the senator’s alleged poor performance.
In a press statement issued to newsmen in Gusau on Tuesday evening, and signed by Bello Muhammad Shinkafi and countersigned by Abubakar Sani Zurmi, it was stated that the move was initiated as part of a strategy for checks and balances related to lawmakers elected by the people.
The statement noted that the move to recall Senator Sahabi Ya’u was designed to demonstrate the dissatisfaction of the people of the Senatorial District with Sahabi’s poor performance in the 10th National Assembly.
“The Zamfara North Senatorial Constituency comprises Kaura Namoda, Birnin Magaji, Zurmi, and Shinkafi local governments.”
“Unlike before, when the senator made some efforts to present the serious concerns of his people, the senator is now inactive, with nothing to show for addressing the concerns of the people of Zamfara North on the Senate floor,” the statement said.
“By June 2024, the 10th National Assembly will be one year old, and Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u will end the year in the Senate without a single bill or motion, despite the series of socio-economic crises faced by the people of the Senatorial Zone.”
“Kaura Namoda, his hometown, as well as Zurmi, Birnin Magaji, and possibly Shinkafi, which has entered into a temporary reconciliation, have been battling with life-threatening armed bandit attacks. Since his re-election in 2023, he has never stood on the floor of the National Assembly to move a motion asking the Senate to make a resolution on how to secure his people,” the statement added.

“As a show of concern, Kaura Namoda has come under constant attacks by bandits. To the extent that some concerned citizens from Kaura Namoda, Sakajiki, and other areas took to the streets to protest their neglect at the hands of the bandits, but Sen. Sahabi Ya’u has never felt it was important to come and console his constituents over the armed bandit tragedies.”
“We are all aware of the constant murderous attacks by armed bandits in Zurmi local government, where, to some extent, reports indicated that even the Emir was almost abducted, and various Community Protection Guards (CPG) operatives, including police officers, were killed. However, Sen. Sahabi Ya’u has never found it important to return home and visit his people to commiserate with them over these unfortunate incidents.”
“Based on this development, we held a meeting in Shinkafi, grouped ourselves, and began collecting signatures. In a week’s time, we will forward our position to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to begin the process of his recall because we are disappointed with his legislative representation,” the statement added.
