The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has stated that it is investigating a shooting incident involving its officers during a raid on a drug joint in the Okpanam area of Asaba, Delta state.
Unfortunately, a young person was hit by a stray bullet during the incident and later died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Agency reported that the Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig-Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), upon receiving initial briefings from the Delta state command of the NDLEA, has set up a panel of top officials from the national headquarters in Abuja.
The panel will proceed to Asaba for an on-the-spot investigation of the unfortunate incident in order to establish the actual facts of the case.
According to the statement, the incident occurred during an intelligence-based raid of the joint of a notorious drug dealer in the Okpanam area of Asaba.
While carrying out the operation, a light blue Toyota Camry 2008 model at the scene suddenly sped off and knocked down one of the NDLEA officers, who is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment in a hospital.
“In an attempt to immobilise the car and prevent its escape, another officer fired a shot aimed at the car’s tyre, which eventually escaped,” the statement explained.
“Subsequently, the officers received reports of a stray bullet hitting a young person. They immediately located the victim’s father, accompanied him to the hospital, and provided support in facilitating treatment. Regrettably, the victim passed away during the process.”
The Director of Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi, stated, “We are in touch with the family to provide necessary assistance while we conclude our investigation of the incident.
We would like to assure the family and members of the public that we will get to the root of the case and take necessary actions.”
