Service is the singular spice which flavours human existence and makes life worth living. Without service to humanity, life becomes a toxic environment devoid of kindness, empathy and support.
As one who shares the same earthly space with vulnerable members of the society, Sen. Effiong Bob’s social responsibility to the needy, speaks volumes of his humaneness.
His life of service began under the tutelage of his father and community when he was first taught how to render service to God through worship and to his parent, family and community.
Iheukwumere documents that in 1990 when he was Supervisory Councilor, Bob’s administration witnessed the completion of most of the abandoned capital projects such as electricity and water projects in his local government – Nsit Ubium.
At the inception of the civil democratic rule in 1999, Bob who was appointed the State’s ninth Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice met with an industrial crisis which eventually became the catalyst needed to engender the much-desired reform in the administration of justice, vis-a-viz the welfare of workers. Without delay, Effiong Bob took on the challenge and within 6 months, restored industrial harmony with motivating welfare packages ranging from pecuniary issues to educational, capacity building, skill-improvement and job-status enhancement.
It would be recalled that whereas, provision was made for skill-enhancing education training within and outside Nigeria for staff of the Ministry of Justice, it was not until the coming of Effiong Bob as Attorney General that this was given not only attention but made effectively practicable and implemented. On the whole, the Senator, as Attorney General ensured that more than 20 of the State counsels utilized this opportunity to travel overseas for specialization in the various areas of law under sponsorship by the State Government.
According to him, the welfare of workers in the Ministry is paramount because a hungry man is an angry man, and would therefore not be expected to be efficient if there is nothing to motivate him/her. Besides, he explained that for the Justice Ministry to function effectively, it ought to start its avowed defense and remedy with its own staff.
This second chronicle of the Senator’s acts of humanity is another pointer to his ingenuity, selflessness and committed service to humanity. Bob is the proverbial square peg in a square hole and one to be trusted with the affairs of governance come 2023.
