Otunba Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), has called for active citizen participation in the democratic process.
Speaking at the North-East Town Hall meeting in Bauchi on Thursday, Showunmi emphasized the need for greater unity and underscored the responsibility of authorities to create platforms that enable citizens to serve more effectively.
“The attitude that makes Nigeria seem like it is not one country has to go. This nation is one, and there is ample evidence to prove that. From our culture to our traditions, the similarities outweigh the differences. Even language, which some consider a dividing factor, is merely a means of communication. We must reject division and celebrate our unity as Nigerians,” he stated.
Showunmi’s remarks set the tone for the town hall meeting, which focused on engaging Nigerians in conversations about democracy, governance, and national development. He stressed the need for citizens to take ownership of the democratic process, citing declining voter turnout as a troubling trend.
“In 2023, despite 93 million registered voters and collected PVCs, only 8 million votes were enough to elect the president. This is a stark reminder that many Nigerians are not exercising their civic responsibilities. This disengagement, coupled with vote buying and selling, erodes the promise of democracy,” he noted.
Showunmi highlighted the urgent need for a change in how Nigerians approach governance and leadership. He called for a “different way of thinking, behaving, and holding leaders accountable,” urging citizens to focus on solutions rather than complaints.
“This is not about political parties,” he clarified. “While I am a member of the PDP, this movement is about the people and the need for collective action. We must educate and sensitize ourselves, hold meaningful conversations, and rebuild trust in the democratic system.”
Hajiya Maimuna Ahmed of the National Women PDP Northern Awareness Forum commended the initiative for its inclusivity and focus on engaging Nigerians beyond political affiliations.

“This engagement isn’t about partisan politics but about amplifying the voices of all Nigerians,” she said. “I also call on women to actively participate in such initiatives aimed at nation-building. Women have a crucial role in shaping the future of this country.”
Hon. Usman Kafa, a former member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of leadership and developmental issues.
“We must voice our concerns about developmental challenges, especially leadership,” he said. “This is not the time to exchange votes for foodstuffs. The North-East must rise above such politics and advocate for good leadership that prioritizes the people’s welfare. Political awareness must grow in our region, and we must unite our thoughts and efforts to build the nation.”
The Bauchi event was part of a series of zonal town hall meetings organized by NOMC to foster dialogue and collaboration across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Showunmi praised the governor of Bauchi State for his support and highlighted the inclusiveness of the gathering, which drew participants from across the North-East.
“This initiative isn’t about government but about Nigerians coming together to chart a better future. We’ve completed sessions in the North-Central and North-East. Next, we’ll head to Kano for the North-West meeting and then move to the southern zones.”
Describing democracy as the “greatest hope for the poor,” Showunmi urged Nigerians to reclaim their political power through informed and active participation.
“If democracy is to work, every citizen must understand their role and rights. The power of one vote can transform lives and elevate communities. We cannot afford to remain passive or sell our future for temporary gains,” he said.
A seasoned political strategist and former spokesperson to Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Showunmi reiterated his commitment to fostering a united Nigeria. The National Opposition Movement Coalition aims to create a platform for Nigerians to discuss and address critical national issues, ensuring that democracy delivers on its promise of inclusion, progress, and shared prosperity.
