ATBU inducts 60 students into chemical society of Nigeria

A total of sixty students who read and completed all academic activities in Industrial Chemistry of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi were on Saturday, 5th October, 2024 inducted as members of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN).

The induction ceremony which was held at the 1,000-seater capacity lecture theatre of the Yelwa campus of the university was presided over by the Bauchi State chapter Chairman of CSN, Dr Auwal Mahmud who is also the HOD, Department of Chemistry.

In his address, the Ag Vice Chancellor of ATBU, Prof Sani Usman Kunya stated that, “We recognise that knowledge alone is not enough. For a society to prosper, it needs entrepreneurs-individuals who can see beyond conventional boundaries, identify unique opportunities, and turn challenges into profitable ventures.

“Chemists are uniquely positioned to do this, given their training in problem-solving, research, and analytical thinking. I urge you to consider the vast potential that lies in the intersection of chemistry and entrepreneurship.

“It is a great pleasure to stand before you today on this remarkable occasion, where we gather to celebrate and formally induct our final-year Industrial Chemistry students into the prestigious Chemical Society of Nigeria and, more broadly, into the noble profession of chemistry. This is a momentous milestone in your journey, one that marks the transition from student to professional and from learner to innovator.

“The theme of the programme today. ‘Empowering the Next Generation of Chemists: Shaping a Future of Innovation and Impact’ is more than just a reflection of our aspirations for you but a clarion call to action. You, our esteemed graduates, hold in your hands the potential to shape a future that leverages chemistry’s power to bring about positive change. Your knowledge and skills are needed more than ever as we face a world marked by rapid technological advancements economic challenges, and pressing environmental issues.

“From the sub-theme ‘The Chemist Entrepreneur – A Panacea for Successful Development’, The chemical industry is a critical driver of economic growth, providing the foundation for a myriad of other industries, from agriculture to pharmaceuticals, from energy to consumer goods. By harnessing your skills as chemists and combining them with an entrepreneurial mindset, you have the ability to create ventures that can address critical needs in our nation, contribute to job creatión, and foster economic development.

“Remember that your education has equipped you not just with scientific knowledge, but with the ability to innovate. Do not shy away from thinking and planning big, but let the principles of sustainability and social responsibility guide you as you build enterprises that will not only contribute to economic success but also positively impact our society.

“Looking deep at the sub-theme ‘Chemistry in the Age of Innovation and Responsibility’, We should remember that we are living in an age where innovation and responsibility must go hand in hand. As chemists, you are guardians of the very elements that form the building blocks of life and matter.

“The impact of chemistry on society is profound, affecting everything from the water we drink to the technology we use, to the medicines that save lives. With deep understanding of chemistry concepts and strong dedication to research, you can help solve some of the greatest challenges of our time, including environmental degradation, energy sustainability, food security and public health.

“However, with this power comes a responsibility. As chemists, you are stewards of a discipline that has immense potential for both good and harm. I urge you to let ethics and integrity guide your actions, so that your contributions to innovation are also contributions to the well-being of humanity and the planet.

“In conclusion, I want to remind you that today’s induction is more than a celebration it is an acknowledgment of your readiness to step into the world as professionals who will contribute not just to the field of chemistry but to society at large.

“You are joining a community of dedicated chemists who are passionate about making a difference, and I am confident that you will carry this passion forward in all your endeavors and you will attain greater heights in your chosen career You can make it just like your seniors, as our university has several success stories of our graduates excelling in various areas of endeavor all over the globe.

“To the parents, guardians, and loved ones, thank you for supporting our graduates through their academic journey. Your sacrifices and encouragement have played an invaluable role in shaping these young minds, and we are deeply grateful.

“To our graduating students, the inductees, congratulations on this achievement. The future holds endless possibilities for you, and I have no doubt that you will rise to the occasion, becoming chemists who innovate, inspire, and lead with purpose.

“As you step out today, I encourage you to remember that you have the power to change the world, May you find success in every endeavor, and may your contributions to chemistry leave an indelible mark on our world.”

Chairman of Chemical Society of Nigeria, congratulated the inductees assuring them that the horizon is wide enough for them to thrive urging them to seize the opportunity to excel.

He charged them to be professionals that they are and introduce positivities into the already saturated chemical environment in the country assuring them that they have the potentials to be greater chemists.

Some of the inductees including Ishola Michael Adegboola expressed joy and happiness that the day finally came for them after a 5-year study took them 7 years to complete due to the incessant industrial action by ASUU and other staff unions.
