The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, recently held a meeting in Abuja with the leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Diaspora to discuss key issues affecting Nigerian students studying abroad.
During the meeting, Dr. Sununu outlined specific measures that have been implemented to streamline the scholarship process, ensuring that deserving students receive the necessary support to pursue their studies. He also emphasized the federal government’s commitment to combating certification fraud, aiming to safeguard the reputation of Nigerian qualifications on the international stage.
A significant portion of the discussion focused on the prevalence of certification racketeering in neighboring countries, particularly in Benin Republic and Togo. The NANS Diaspora delegation, led by its President, Juwon Fayomi Chris, urged the federal government to reconsider lifting the ban on certificates obtained from universities in these countries. The delegation highlighted how this fraudulent practice has been undermining the credibility of Nigerian students and their educational qualifications.
Chris further noted that the meeting aimed to find solutions to the challenges faced by Nigerian students abroad, particularly in securing and maintaining international scholarships. He expressed the group’s appreciation for the Minister’s proactive approach and dedication to resolving these challenges.

Also present at the meeting was the Senior Special Adviser on Student Engagement to President Bola Tinubu, Sunday Dayo Asefon, who accompanied the Minister. Asefon echoed concerns about how fraudulent practices are affecting the credibility of Nigerian students and their qualifications, raising serious issues for both students and educational institutions.
Asefon reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to maintaining open and transparent communication channels with Nigerian students abroad. He emphasized that continuous dialogue is essential in addressing the challenges faced by Nigerian students in the diaspora and ensuring their academic success.
“This meeting marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to support Nigerian students globally, reinforcing the government’s dedication to their well-being and future success,” Asefon concluded.
