The Jigawa State branch of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) has expressed support for the federal government’s policy to remove fuel subsidy by June 2023.

According to the NLC branch secretary, Comrade Jide Tanko, in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital, “Yes you all know this is the president-elect chief Bola Ahmed Tinibu advocating for.”

Tanko explained that if the removal of fuel subsidy will make things better for Nigeria, then why not support it? “NLC is all about workers, how that workers benefit from the subsidy removal? And how it can improve the workers’ condition,” he added.

He further noted that NLC had always been against the removal of fuel subsidy, except if different negotiations were made with the workers of Nigeria. Tanko emphasized that “NLC is all about workers,” and if the removal of fuel subsidy will make things better for Nigeria, then they are in support of it.

However, Tanko stated that if the removal of the fuel subsidy will not impact workers’ working conditions, then NLC will not support it. He also commented on the 40 per cent salary increase by the federal government, revealing that the Jigawa state government has not yet discussed the matter with them.

Tanko commended the Jigawa state government’s efforts in improving staff and workers’ welfare, adding that Governor Badaru Abubakar had recently approved the increase of pension for pensioners in the state from N7,000 to N12,000 minimum.

He also emphasized the good relationship between the labour and Jigawa state government, stating, “We have always been contacted and negotiates on any labour matters.”
