The president of the Grade A Customary  Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State has heard the divorce suit brought before it by a man, Bamidele Akanmu against his wife, Tanwa Akanmu, on the grounds of irresponsibility, constant fight and breach of trust.

Bamidele told the court that Tanwa was never satisfied with all that he did to make her and their children comfortable.

According to him, Tanwa, rather than appreciate him, nagged and fought him always.

The plaintiff also expressed lack of trust in his wife who, according to him, duped him of his money twice.

The plaintiff stated that he joined a group which contributed money on weekly basis and collected the sum in turns through his wife.

Bamidele lamented that Tanwa on two different occasions collected his contribution on his behalf, but refused to give him.

He explained that his wife came up with cock and bull stories instead of making available his money.

Bamidele stated that Tanwa also turned their children against him and succeeded in making life difficult for him.

The plaintiff said he had had enough of his wife’s atrocities and thus prayed that the court ruled that they went their separate ways.

Tanwa agreed to divorce, but prayed the court to grant her custody of their children.

According to her, her husband had always neglected their children and starved them of food.

Tanwa admitted spending her husband’s money stating that she used it to buy second-hand bras and pants for their female children and the remaining on foodstuff and soup.

The defendant further requested that Bamidele rented a two-bedroom flat apartment for her and their children.

She told the court that the plaintiff was initially a loving and responsible husband, but that he changed as a result of his friend who was a bad influence on him.

Tanwa said Bamidele suddenly turned a drunk, womaniser and also smoked.

According to her any time he smoked and was high, he would beat her blue black and threaten her with a cutlass.

Bamidele, in his evidence, stated that, “I am tired of my relationship with my wife. I have known no rest since I got married to him.

“Tanwa is a nagging wife. She is never satisfied with all that I did to make her and our children comfortable.

“Every time I try to make her to understand that the downturn of the nation’s economy is taking its toll on my business, she turns the whole house upside-down and fights me.

“Tanwa is stubborn and rebellious. She flouts my order at will. I now struggle to hold my position as the head of the home.

“My wife has never been a good example to our children. Tanwa is dubious among other things and I no longer trust her.

“She also turned our children against me.

“I joined two groups involved in weekly contributions through her and ensured I did not default at any time.

“I waited anxiously to collect my money, but my wife duped me on the two occasions it was my turn to collect the sum contributed.

“She gave me a small amount out of the first contribution with a promise of bringing the remaining soon, but she never did.

“I used the little amount she gave me to buy a television set.

“Tanwa started telling me cock and bull stories when I demanded to have the remaining money after waiting for weeks.

“She dashed my hope of meeting some needs in the home.

“I had the intention of paying our house rent out of the second contribution, but this plan was also aborted because my wife never handed over the money to me.

“Our landlord later threw us out of his house and we had to move to my father’s house.

“My lord, I no longer see any further sense in my marriage to my wife. I, therefore, pray that you end our relationship.”

Tanwa, while responding told the court that: “My husband was poor when we met, he, therefore, could not afford to carry out the expected marital rites and pay my bride price.

“We enjoyed a blissful marriage till we moved to his father’s house, then he changed and became reckless.

“My husband has a friend who is a bad influence on him.

“He started drinking and keeping late nights.

“Bamidele also smokes and becomes violent when he is high.

“He will descend on me with punches and also threatened me with a cutlass.

“He also became unfaithful to me and started running after everything in skirt.

“Bamidele has consistently neglected our children and starved them of food.

“My lord, I used the contribution he made mention of to buy our female children Grade 1 second-hand bras and pants to cover the sensitive parts of their bodies.

“I spent the remaining amount to buy foodstuff and also prepare soup for the family.

“My husband is indifferent to our children’s education. Two out of our four children are presently out of school, because he failed to pay their school fees.

“The last time we came to court, he started telling everyone who cared to listen that the court had dissolved our marriage.

“My lord, I agree that our marriage be dissolved.

“But I pray the court to grant me custody of our children and make my husband responsible for their feeding, education and medical needs.

“I also pray the court to rule that he should rent a two-bedroom apartment for me and our children because we have no place to move to.”

The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo adjourned the case.
