The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has dispatched a team to the site of the recent boat accident to investigate the root cause and provide timely updates to the public.
NIWA extended its deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic boat mishap that occurred on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, near Ezetu 1 community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The incident, triggered by an engine explosion, led to the unfortunate loss of lives among both passengers and crew members.
In a press statement released on Friday, NIWA’s AGM (Corporate Affairs), Suleiman Makama, expressed solidarity with the Government of Bayelsa State and the bereaved families, offering prayers for the souls of the departed.

Following the distressing incident, NIWA swiftly mobilized its search and rescue team to the scene to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure the public remains informed.
NIWA emphasized the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations for both boat operators and passengers, including the mandatory use of life jackets on the Inland Waterways.
The authority urges all stakeholders in the maritime sector to prioritize safety measures and comply with regulations to prevent future tragedies on the waterways.
