Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has expressed his displeasure over the increasing rate of indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents across the state, especially in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The governor, who revealed that the effects of the unwholesome act are dangerous to health and the environment, especially flooding, urged the citizens to support the efforts of the government to make the streets clean and habitable.
Oyebanji, represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Tosin Aluko, spoke at the weekend in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, during the 2023 World Cleanup Day, aimed at raising awareness about the mismanaged waste crisis by mobilising all spheres of society to participate in cleanup actions.
The Governor said that despite the huge investment of the government in waste management, the residents have failed to complement the efforts of the government, with heaps of refuse taking over most parts of the state.
According to him, “It is sad to see how our state has become due to improper waste disposal; no place is exempted, either public or private buildings, residential apartments, markets, streets, roads, medians, drainages, canals, or undeveloped plots of land that have turned into undesignated refuse dumping Sites. I must say, this is not the Ekiti we all grew up to know.”
He reiterated the earlier stand of the government to arrest and prosecute anyone found dumping refuse in unauthorised locations in the state.
While calling on non-governmental organisations and relevant stakeholders to join the state government in sensitising the people against indiscriminate dumping of waste and towards achieving a clean, safe and healthy environment, the Governor charged the people to develop ideas on how to convert waste to wealth creation to boost the state economy. ”
He advised residents to register with the State Waste Management Authority for house-to-house collection of their waste.
In their separate goodwill messages, The Founder of Triple Green Environmental Development (TGED) Foundation, Oluwaseyi Ebenezer, and The Ekiti State Director, National Environmental Standards Regulations Enforcement Agency, Mrs. Bosede Tomori, lauded the state government for their support towards the 2023 World Clean Up Day.
The duo, however, called on the government to ensure the sustainability of the event as an annual celebration in the overall interest of society.
