Former President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, called for the quick despatch of medical supplies and other relief materials to survivors of last Sunday’s attacks by suspected terrorists on Mafa village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe.
Many were feared killed by the attackers, who also razed buildings, but the exact number of the dead had yet to be ascertained as of Monday, when the Yobe State Police Command, spoke to newsmen over the security issue.
“The attack, which occurred at about 4 pm on Sunday, September 1, 2024, resulted in the deaths of several innocent civilians, and the burning and destruction of properties.
“I strongly condemn the heinous act of violence and extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“Similarly, I condole His Excellency, the Yobe State Governor, Rt. Hon. Mai Mala Buni (CON), the Yobe state Government and the entire people of Yobe.
“I call on the security agencies to intensify efforts in tracking down the perpetrators of this heinous and dastardly act and bringing them to justice.
“I call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and North East Development Commission (NEDC) to dispatch medical personnel and relief materials to the affected community to provide necessary assistance and support to the injured and displaced residents”, Lawan said in a statement he personally signed on Tuesday.
Lawan, who is the current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, urged the people of Tarmuwa Local Government Area to remain calm and vigilant, advising them to report any suspicious activities to the security agencies for prompt response.
The latest killings came just a few days after about three students of Faudiya School in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State were reported killed by suspected gunmen.
The Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, while speaking to the media in Damaturu, the state capital on Monday, commented on the Mafa killings.
Abdulkarim stated, ”We are yet to ascertain the number of lives lost in the incident, which occurred at about 4 pm on Sunday in the remote village.
”Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim, both Mafa residents, reported the incident to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station.
“Suspected Boko Haram terrorists armed with rifles and Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) attacked Mafa Ward on more than 50 motorcycles and set ablaze many shops and houses.
“The terrorists also killed many people, but we are yet to ascertain the actual number of the casualties.”
