A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck Japan’s coast late Monday, prompting officials to issue a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.
The quake occurred near Miyazaki Prefecture at approximately 9:19 p.m. local time, with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reporting an intensity of “lower 5” on the Japanese scale.
Residents in the affected areas have been warned to stay away from coastal waters, with the JMA cautioning that tsunami waves could reach up to 1 meter in height.
The earthquake had an epicenter depth of roughly 19 miles, according to Japanese officials.
“Tsunami can strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or go near coastal areas,” the agency said on X.
