The Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has announced a policy change regarding the posting of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, stating that corps members will no longer be assigned to roles outside their fields of study.

Speaking during an interview on the Mic On podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Olawande recalled his own NYSC experience in Gombe, where, despite studying civil engineering, he was posted to a school.

He expressed dissatisfaction with such mismatches, questioning their relevance to professional development.

The minister emphasised that he had issued a ministerial directive to ensure corps members are assigned roles aligned with their areas of expertise.

He stressed that this policy would be strictly enforced, reiterating his commitment to creating a more impactful and productive service year.

Olawande added that the NYSC should provide corps members with opportunities to gain meaningful experiences that positively shape their futures, rather than being a routine national obligation.

He said, “I’ve made a ministerial order and I’m serious about it. All these implementations are going to come out. No corps member should be posted to where it is not their area of study. It will never happen again. I can tell you for free. I’m going to start fighting people about it. If they like, let anything happen but as much as I have the backing of the president.

“We must do the right thing. If we don’t do it now, there is no time we can do it again. It must be a productive year. Not that I just want to go and serve my father’s land. It must be a scheme that will affect your life positively within one year.”
