It made headlines yesterday that two contenders for the post of APC National Chairman were tipped to clinch the post among others.

Consequently, the two politicians: former Governor of Nasarawa State, Tanko Al-Makura and Senator Sani Musa representing Niger East are now seen as the frontrunners in the race. An earlier report stated that Al-Makura has the backings of APC Governors and other forces in the party while Musa enjoys the backing of top people in the Presidency and other people.

However, this article will discuss two main reasons Al-Makura and Musa are likely to clinch the post based on the new decision made by the APC.

(1). APC decided to allow the North to produce the National Chairman. While many people felt that the party would allow the South especially South South to produce the new National Chairman since Adams Oshiomhole did not complete his tenure, APC leadership thinks otherwise.

The party did not even zone the post to the South. Rather, it zoned it to the North which has automatically favoured Al-Makura, Musa and other contenders from the North battling to clinch the post. It was revealed that the party decided that all the posts previously held by Southerners would go to the North and vice versa.

(2). The party micro-zoned the post to North Central zone. Apart from zoning the post of APC National Chairman to the North as region, the APC then micro -zoned it to the North Central zone where Al-Makura from Nasarawa State and Musa from Niger State hail from. With this new twist, it is now clearer that the coast may be clear for either Al-Makura or Musa to clinch the post. This is because this new decision by APC leadership has taken out of the way other strong contenders in the race who are from other zones in the North.

As far as North Central zone is concerned, Al-Makura and Musa are the two main contenders. They are tipped to clinch the post earlier and the kind of backings they have may help any of them to win it. The main issue now is that whoever gets more backing from relevant stakeholders, party members and probably from other aspirants will emerge the winner. The battle is now largely between Al-Makura and Musa as well as other contenders that insist on running against all odds.
