The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 39-year-old woman, Lilian Nwarache, who took a bottle of insecticide as a result of an overwhelming prolonged illness in the Iwaya area of Lagos State.
Nwarache was reported to have been suffering from a protracted illness and had been seeking a cure in a church in Iwaya. However, she became frustrated with her condition and drank a full bottle of insecticide on November 3, 2023.
She was alleged to have attempted to jump into a canal after drinking the insecticide, but passers-by prevented her. She was then rushed to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed her death.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated, “It was reported on Friday, around 2 pm, at the Sabo police station, that a 39-year-old woman with an unknown address committed suicide. She had been battling a prolonged illness and had sought prayers at a church.”
Hundeyin disclosed that three passports belonging to the deceased, as well as her Samsung phone, were found in her bag.
“Detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene. Photographs were taken, the insecticide bottle containing a small amount of its content, her three passports, and one Samsung phone were recovered from her small bag.”
He further mentioned that efforts were underway to contact her family members, and her body had been deposited at the Lagos Mainland Hospital Mortuary for an autopsy.
“Her body has been removed and placed in the Lagos Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Efforts to contact her family members are ongoing, and preliminary investigations are also in progress,” he added.
