The Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Professor Timothy Adebayo, said the poor state of Oyo-Ogbomoso road is gradually making it impassable for commuters with more portions of the road damaged.

Speaking during a meeting with the academic and non-academic staff of ACU, Adebayo appealed to the Federal and Oyo State governments to come to the aid of commuters plying the road, stating that the asphalt covering the road surface and underneath native soil have been eroded.

He said that because the road connects the west and northern parts of Nigeria, thousands of articulated and commercial vehicles ply the road daily, pointing out that those who use the road now experience nightmares because of the emergence of huge potholes in several parts of the road.

He said, “The Oyo-Ogbomoso road connects economic activities between the west and northern parts of Nigeria. Thousands of tankers, articulated vehicles, commercial buses and private vehicles ply the road for commercial and other purposes.

“But in the past few years, the road began to deteriorate and torn under the weight of heavy duty trucks, culminating in its present state of near dilapidation. There are huge potholes that hinder free flow of traffic on the road and more a formed as we advance into the middle of the rainy season unless the unpalatable situation is arrested. One of the existing huge potholes is in the front of Ajayi Crowther University gate.

“Every day, trucks conveying tons of food stuff and petroleum products are trapped in the pothole when they make attempt to navigate through it, especially when it rains. Oftentimes, these trucks fall and spill their content on the road, causing traffic jam.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government and government of Oyo State to come to the aid of commuters using the road. This is not the first time that the management of Ajayi Crowther University is crying out and appealing to government to rehabilitate the road. Our students, staff and entire university community are direct victims of the poor state of the road, that is why we are not relenting in making this appeal to the relevant authorities.”
