The Bauchi State Government has demonstrated its commitment to the improvement of girl-child education and empowerment by paying the sum of N150 million as counterpart funding.

The government also unveiled the World Bank Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project in the state.

During a news briefing held in the Project Office on Friday, Hajiya Jamila Dahiru, the Project Coordinator of AGILE, disclosed the details of the project.

She explained that AGILE is a World Bank-assisted initiative of the Federal Government aimed at improving secondary education and empowerment opportunities for adolescent girls in the state.

The initiative is one of the first comprehensive interventions to empower girls to access and complete secondary school education.

Dr Sule Madara, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, represented the Project Coordinator during the briefing.

He emphasised that the AGILE project would benefit adolescent girls and vulnerable families across all 20 local government areas in the state.

The project aims to address the various constraints that girls face through a range of interventions, including school construction and rehabilitation, improved safety conditions, communication campaigns, life skills training, health and nutrition information, digital skills training, cash transfers, and strengthening of education systems.

Dahiru highlighted the challenges faced by adolescent girls in accessing and completing secondary education, such as poor infrastructure, inadequate water sanitation and hygiene facilities, and financial constraints.

She noted that these factors have limited the number of girls who can access secondary school education.

Bauchi State is among the 11 states selected in the country to benefit from the World Bank AGILE project, which aims to boost adolescent girls’ education.
