Community leader arrested for allegedly shooting two youths in Ondo

A community leader, Sajowa of Egako, Chief Moses Adeyemo has been arrested by the Ondo State Police command, following the alleged shooting of two people in Ogbagi Akoko in Akoko North Local Government Area of the state during the celebration of a popular festival in the town.

The youths in the town were said to be celebrating the annual Ajagbo festival in the town, singing around the various quarters in the town before the ugly incident occurred.

According to one of the youths, who explained that the festival entails mocking any indigene of the town who gas engaged in any form of vices or atrocities during the year

He said trouble started when the youths reached Adeyemo’s compound and started mocking him over an alleged infidelity he had committed.

The act of the youths infuriated the Sajowa of Egako, who rushed inside the house only to emerge with his gun, and allegedly shoot into the air, hitting two of the youths in the process, Eniola Adewumi and Timilehin Ogunyemi.

The two victims were rushed to the hospital immediately, Adewunmi was hit on the hand, Ogunyemi was shot in the leg and they were attended to.

But Adewumi said he had to discharge himself from the hospital as he could not afford to pay the N300,000 medical bill and had to resolve to a traditional home to remove the pellet from his ankle.

Speaking in his hospital, Adewumi said he was lucky to have escaped with his life but lamented that he might lose his leg if proper medical attention was not given to it.

The wife of the victim, Mrs Olatunde Adewumi while speaking, solicited for help, saying her husband had been writhing in pain for days as they could not afford the bill charged at the traditional home.

A youth leader in Ogbagi, Kehinde Oyeyemi expressed surprise that the Ajagbo festival which had been an age-long festival turned bloody.

Oyeyemi called for a thorough investigation into the incident and a review of the indiscriminate use of local firearms in the town.

Confirming the incident, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmi Odunlami said the suspect, Chief Adeyemo had been arrested and transferred to Akure for further investigation.

“The suspect had been arrested and the investigation is ongoing while the suspect had been transferred to the State CID for investigation,” she said.
