The Child’s Rights Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) located in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, has announced that it has successfully reconciled and reunited over 8,000 vulnerable children with society since its establishment in 2003.

Mr Sam Itauma, the President/Chief Executive Officer of the centre, disclosed this during a press briefing held on Sunday to mark the 20th Anniversary Celebration of CRARN.

According to Itauma, numerous children who were either brought to the centre by good Samaritans or found on the streets under unfavourable conditions have been rehabilitated, reconciled with their families, and integrated back into society, both within and outside the state.

Itauma expressed concern over the situation where some vulnerable children are labelled as witches, stigmatized, and ejected from their homes, forcing them to suffer in hazardous and harsh weather conditions.

“Our efforts have provided rehabilitation and support to more than 8,000 vulnerable children who have either received assistance from us or were rescued from our CRARN facility,” he said.

He further stated, “Approximately 15 vulnerable children have graduated from various universities in the country, 20 children have graduated from College of Education, and 25 are currently enrolled in different tertiary institutions within and outside the state.”

To facilitate the education of children at the centre, Itauma explained that CRARN has established the CRARN Academy, comprising six structures, where the children receive education from primary to secondary levels.

He appealed for support from individuals, companies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to improve the lives of vulnerable children in the centre.

Itauma expressed gratitude to the security agencies in the state, including the Department of State Services (DSS), for their voluntary partnership and for playing a key role in protecting the vulnerable children in the centre and the state.

He emphasized the importance of raising awareness and extending a helping hand to vulnerable children in society.

However, he lamented that many vulnerable children, especially females, suffer sexual abuse at the hands of unscrupulous individuals, and some even die due to torture before help can reach them.

He thanked the state government for its continuous support, which led to the establishment of CRARN in 2003.

The executive director explained that the 20th Anniversary Celebration aims to draw the attention of local, state, and federal governments to lend a helping hand in furthering the cause of serving vulnerable children.
