The Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Christopher Musa, has pleaded with Nigerians to have confidence in the military despite the accidental military drone attack that led to the deaths of many people in Kaduna State last week.

Even as a Professor of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Etannibi Alemika advocated for a national retreat to dissect the multitude of challenges confronting Nigeria as a nation.

General Musa, who made the plea at the graduation of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 45 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Jos, Plateau State, said it was an unfortunate incident that shouldn’t have happened.

“It was a mistake; it was because those in charge were not careful enough. They had reported that something was going to happen, and at the instant something similar happened and they were carried away, it wasn’t unpurposed.

“My fear is when you discourage our troops; even when something real happens, they wouldn’t want to act for fear of not committing a mistake.

Nobody in his right mind would just look at people and bomb them; we are all Nigerians and meant to protect Nigerians, and that is what we are doing, and in the course of it, we might make a mistake because we are humans, but it can never be deliberate,” he said.

The Chief of Defence Staff urged Nigerians to always pray for the country and its leadership, adding that Nigeria is a great and wonderful country that needs the support and prayers of all.

Also, a Professor of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Etannibi Alemika, while delivering the Annual Distinguished Lecture of NIPSS titled “Security Challenges and Security Governance in Nigeria,” advocated for a national retreat to dissect the security, economic, and other myriad of problems affecting the growth of Nigeria.

He narrated that the problems the country is currently going through started in 1986, when the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) was introduced, adding that after that, many visible industries collapsed and some were forced to leave the country.

“We need a national retreat to dissect the major challenges facing the country and to know how we got to where we are in the country today.

The present situation in the country requires special diagnostics. The rain, or rather, the problem of Nigeria, started in 1986 when we adopted the structural adjustment programme. Before SAP, we were producing basic things. Some industries were visible, but SAP drove them away.

Professor Alemika further pointed out that security was all about the safety, peace of mind, and well-being of individuals, adding that many important policies were introduced without considering the security implications.

He said, “Security is equally about safety, peace of mind, and the well-being of individuals.”When you removed the subsidy, did you factor in the security implications?

For every step we take, we must ask ourselves what the security implications are, how we can mitigate them, and how we can build resilience against them.

“If we can do this, the challenges confronting the security agencies will be minimal, and they will be able to channel their energy to the appropriate areas of security that require urgent attention.

If you don’t do this, you are asking security to solve both the economic and security problems confronting the nation. They are not trained to solve the economic problem.”.
