The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress APC, has charged the State Independent National Electoral Commission RSIEC

to ensure the prompt conduct of local government elections in the state in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The charge was given by the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha after a meeting between the RSIEC and the Inter Party Advisory Council, IPAC, in Rivers State at the commission’s office in Port Harcourt.

Okocha confirmed that the APC would participate fully in the next local government elections in the state, expressing  confidence that his party would win in all 23 LGAs and 319 wards of the state.

He urged the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and security agencies to create an enabling environment for a seamless LGA elections, after the tenure of current serving Chairmen and councilors in the state.

He also urged the RSIEC to notify political parties about the timetable for council elections within the stipulated time.

Earlier in his address to the IPAC members, the RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli commended them for a peaceful deliberation and their unity of purpose.

He assured of the Commission’s commitment to ensure that political parties receive all necessary information about the conduct of council elections in the state.

The tenure of the current serving local government Chairmen and councilors will expire by June 2024 and following the recent 8-point Presidential Peace Proclamation endorsed by the Governor Fubara, council elections must hold to allow new set of elected chairmen and councillors to run the 23 local council areas of Rivers State.

The peace proclamation prohibits the state governor from setting up caretaker committees for the local council areas.
