Twenty tenants are six shops at 9 Awkuzu Street mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt was sacked Tuesday morning by fire which razed down their homes and shops.

Property worth millions of naira was also destroyed in the inferno that was completely burnt down by the fire.

Reports have it that the fire was caused by a woman who left her cooking stove on in her room and went out with the fire starting in her room and spreading through the building constructed in one-one room pattern popularly called “face me, I face you”.

A source at the scene told our correspondent the neighbours who saw the fire and raised the alarm with many of them running helter-skelter to secure documents or any property they could save from the fire.

He said that a distress call was made to the State Fire Service who responded that they did not have water and that their vehicles were in a state of disrepair.

A resident of the compound who gave his name as Moses reported that the fire was said to have started from the room of the house’s tenants, a woman who left her cooking gas on and went out to the hospital.

He said that available information suggests that the gas whose regulator was bad exploded and the fire spread to other parts of the building.

Moses said the fire spread so fast that the occupants of the compounds were not able to bring out tangible properties from the building lamenting that the building was completely razed within a short space of time.

When our correspondent visited the scene of the incident some men of the Nigeria Police Force from Mile 1 Police Divisional headquarters were noticed on the ground providing security and preventing hoodlums from stealing a few of the properties some people were able to salvage from the fire.
