Gunmen kill 37-year-old businessman in Bauchi village

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have killed a 37-year-old businessman, Chinonso Ugwu, a resident of Balele village in Ningi LGA of Bauchi State.

This is coming a few days after the Bauchi State Police Command said that it arrested the gunmen who kidnapped a traditional ruler in Ningi LGA. 

A resident of the village told Tribune Online that the gunmen stormed the village around 1:30am early Tuesday morning shooting sporadically to scare people who were already deep in their sleep.

The source added that the gunmen suspected to be kidnappers who have been terrorizing different communities in the area, went to the house of the late businessman, Chinonso Ugwu, shot him several times in the stomach and head.

He added that nobody could come out to his rescue until daybreak when he was rushed to the Burra General Hospital in the company of Police personnel where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

When contacted, the Deputy Caretaker Chairman of Ningi LGA,  Hon Lawan Muhammad, in his confirmation of the incident, condemned the act.

He said that immediately he got the report of the attack, he mobilised security operatives comprising the Military and Police to the village for intervention and possible rescue and protection of the residents.

Lawan Mohammed narrated that the gunmen invaded the house of the late businessman in Balele village, Burra District. 

He added that the gunmen banged on the door several times but he refused to open it for them, he stood by the door from the inside to prevent them from gaining entrance, it was at that they shot at the door severally, in the process, some bullet hit him.

He reiterated that the Council is working with security agencies in the area to ensure that there was security of lives and properties of people in the area in spite of the incessant attacks by the unknown gunmen and other bandits. 

Bauchi State Police Command could not confirm the incident as the Command PPRO, SP Ahmed Wakili did not reply to neither SMS nor whatsapp message sent to his mobile number as of the time of filing this report.
