Edo State Deputy Governor and governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 20, 2024, governorship election, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has described himself as the most qualified and competent candidate for the party’s ticket.

He asserted that, as a native, he understands what it takes to turn Edo State around for good and ensure rapid development.

On Thursday, Shaibu made these remarks while submitting his nomination form at the Wadata Plaza, PDP’s national secretariat headquarters in Abuja.

Shaibu is currently competing with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s ‘anointed man,’ Isue Ighodalo, for the PDP governorship ticket.

He believes that his legislative and executive experience in government puts him in good stead ahead of other contenders for the party’s ticket.

Shaibu expressed his readiness to work for the people who believe in his capacity and capability to move the state forward.

He urged the people of Edo to resist those attempting to reintroduce godfatherism to the state through their associates and cronies.

“I have come to submit our nomination form. I use the term ‘our nomination form’ because the Philip Shaibu Train represents the people of Edo.

We initiated the journey of rescuing Edo State in 2006, with a clear vision of reclaiming the state for the people. Despite facing challenges along the way, we succeeded in returning the state to the people. Unfortunately, there was another attempt to hijack the state, and we stood firm against it.

This election poses another challenge because some want to shift governance from the people to businessmen, and we firmly reject that. Edo State cannot regress; it must continue to move forward with power vested in the people, as PDP declares, ‘Power to the People,’ not to business associates.

Today, I inform the PDP leadership that, especially myself, I have faced harassment and intimidation. However, I have emerged successful in every instance.”

“Just yesterday, we received the blueprint for our plans in Edo State. I have set up a committee for the construction of an overhead bridge from Third Junction to Ramat Square.

We are committed to improving traffic flow for the benefit of our people. Unlike newcomers or outsiders, I understand the workings of Edo State government due to my experience in the legislative arm and eight years as the deputy governor.

I am not running for governor due to personal ambition but to save Edo State from businessmen seeking to take control.”

Pascal Adigwe, the deputy national organizing secretary of the PDP, spoke on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC), urging peace among the aspirants and appealing to them to prioritize the party’s interests during the election.

“Your Excellency, you have performed admirably, and we are aware of your records. We know you, as we know the others. We hope and believe that you will conduct this race with integrity.

We implore you to prioritize peace as we head into the primaries and ultimately the election.

While we are not averse to competition, let us proceed peacefully. Secondly, let us consider the desires of the people we aim to govern. Craft our aspirations and ambitions around the people’s wishes.

Thirdly, he emphasised extra commitment, unity of purpose, and struggle. We appeal to you to strengthen our party.

You are not a novice in election contests, and we are familiar with your past victories. Elections may lead to wins or losses, but it’s essential to remember that losing does not equate to failure or demise. Stay committed whether you win or lose.”
