Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; his deputy, Mr Bayo Lawal and 30 out of the 32 elected members of the State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, received their certificates of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The event held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan saw National Commissioner (Oyo, Lagos and Ekiti States), Mr Sam Olumekun issue certificates to Makinde and his deputy while Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Oyo State, Dr Adeniran Tella issued those of the Assembly members-elect.

Speaking, Olumekun said the certificates were issued in line with section 72 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022 which stipulates, “A sealed certificate of return at an election in a prescribed form shall be issued within 14 days to every candidate who has been returned by the returning officer in an election under this Act.”

Olumekun said the certificates were issued to Makinde and their deputy, the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) having fulfilled the requirements both in terms of having the highest number of votes and the spread across all local government areas in the State.

On his part, Oyo REC, Tella assured of the commission’s commitment to the credibility of the electoral process and becoming one of the best election management bodies in the world.

Makinde, in his remarks, said he was committed to Oyo State becoming the envy of all States in the country.

He said he adopted a mood of reflection going the massive support he received from the Oyo people that made him win with a landslide.

Makinde thanked his co-contestants, several of whom had sent in messages of congratulations, particularly noting that the candidate of Accord, Chief Bayo Adelabu put a call across to congratulate him while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) sent him a note of congratulations.

Meanwhile, the commission said the state lawmakers-elect who were not present, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin of Ibarapa East and Micheal Olubisi from Ogbomoso North are expected to come to its state office, Ibadan, to collect their certificates of return.
