The management of Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) has announced the death of a missing year-two nursing student of the institution, Miss Modupe Deborah Atanda.

The student, who was declared missing earlier this week, was found dead late Wednesday night.

Reacting to the unfortunate development, the management of the school, through a memo released by its Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, described the death as ‘disturbing’, adding that the university will stop at nothing to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

The statement, which was made available on the institution’s official website, reads in part, “It will be recalled that earlier today, the Management had made public the disturbing development of the missing of the deceased and assured that investigation was ongoing as to unravel the whereabouts of the poor student.

“But current information reaching the security outfit of the University has disclosed that the said student is dead.

“While the University Management condoles with the deceased’s family and the generality of the University community, particularly our dear students, the Management reiterated that investigation is still ongoing and this is being done in collaboration with national security agencies to get to the root of the sad development and bring to book the culprits.”

Similarly, the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, through a statement released by its president, Ajayi Dotun Emmanuel, described the death as ‘a thing of great pain’.

Comrade Emmanuel, on behalf of the students, charged security operatives in Ekiti State to ensure proper investigation and apprehension of those responsible for the death of the student.

He, however, dismissed reports going round some part of the media (not Tribune) that some parts of the deceased’s body were mutilated.

The statement reads in full:

“Dear colleagues, it is with a saddened and heavy heart that we mourn the gruesome demise of one of our late ATANDA MODUPE DEBORAH, who, before her death, was a year two student of the Department of Nursing.

“The cause of death and manner in which she died is a thing of great pain to the entire student populace in FUOYE. As we say our goodbyes to a precious and bright student such as Modupe, members of the FUOYE Students Union Government (FUOYESUG) visited the morgue, and we were able to confirm to everyone that no part of her body was mutilated, contrary to claims and rumors flying around. We can confirm that not less than twelve (12) people have been arrested in connection with the crime, and we would not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“While we mourn her sudden loss and pay our last respects to the dead, we hereby charge every security operative in EKITI STATE to investigate and bring the perpetrators of this grave crime to book. A team comprising the student union executives would pay a condolence visit to her parents and loved ones to show support for the family at this trying time. We pray to God, in His infinite mercies, to grant the departed soul eternal rest and give us the fortitude to bear the loss. We demand justice!!!”
