A woman, Teju, has told Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, that she is no longer interested in her marriage to her husband, Segun (surname withheld), whom she accused of irresponsibility, neglect and nonchalance towards her welfare and that of their children.

Teju stated that she had suffered enough in the hands of her husband and thus prayed for the dissolution of their union.

Segun was absent in court despite being served court summonses.

Giving her evidence, Teju said, “I started living with my husband shortly after we met and dated.

“We never held any wedding ceremony and he did not pay my dowry.

“My husband did not give me a dime for ante-natal treatment after he impregnated me.

“I solely bore the expenses of my medical care and bought our baby items.

“He became worse after I had our baby. He cared less about our welfare and left us to starve.

“We hardly cook in the house because my husband gave me and our children meager amount for food. We buy food from food vendors most of the time which is not satisfying.

“Our children were always looking underfed as a result of their poor eating habit.

“My husband has never shown interest in our children’s education. I enrolled them in school and have been paying their school fees.

“He never monitors their performance in school and was not bothered if they had text books for studies.

“My husband shows our children no affection. He restricts them from playing in the sitting room. According to him, they would spoil his electronic gadgets.

“I gave him my support and stood as his guarantor when he wanted to purchase a motorcycle for commercial purpose.

“I believed we would start living comfortably, but this was not so. Life became tougher because he refused to make money available in the home. I cannot explain what he uses the proceeds from his business for.

“I came to court because I am fed up with living in hardship in our marriage. I desire a better lifestyle.

“I, therefore, pray this honourable court to end our marriage and grant me custody of our children.

The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, having heard the plaintiff adjourned the case for further hearing.

She ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served the defendant.
