‘My husband walked out of our marriage, said prophet told him I was responsible for his woes’

Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has heard the testimony of a woman, Christiana Akinyemi, who was dragged to court by her husband, Abiodun Akinyemi, on the grounds that she was quarrelsome and always fighting him.

The plaintiff stated that he lost his joy when he got married to the defendant.

Abiodun stated that he got so frustrated that he moved out of their home into an apartment in their church, but that Christiana rather than showing remorse came to church to fight and disgrace him.

He added that she of recent took to threatening him.

The defendant was absent in court when the plaintiff opened his case.

The court adjourned the case and ordered that she was served a fresh hearing notice.

Christiana giving her testimony said, “I met my husband while training as an apprentice.

“We met on the mountain where we went to pray.

“I was initially reluctant going into a relationship with him, but my mother encouraged me.

“I gave a go-ahead to our relationship and this ended in marriage.

“We held an introduction ceremony which was well attended by both families and he paid my bride price.

“We lost our first child after delivery and had five others after this out of which four are remaining.

“My husband has proved to be irresponsible since the outset of our marriage.

“He abandoned his duties in the home and neglected our children.

“He hardly gave us feeding allowance and was not bothered about our children’s welfare.

“He returned home one day screaming and shouting at me and calling me names.

“He stated that a prophet told him I was the cause of his setback and misfortune and that he instructed him to part ways with me.

“He went to his room, packed his belongings and moved out of the house.

“He walked out of our marriage since January 2019 and never deemed it fit to ask about our children’s welfare.

“Our children were sent out of school this term because he has failed to pay their school fees.

“My lord, I agree to divorce and also pray for the custody of our children.

“I want him to give our children, N40,000 monthly for their upkeep and pay their school fees as at when due.”

The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo adjourned the case till August 8.
