My wife refused to be committed to our marriage vow. She refused to abide with me when I needed her most. She abandoned me when I was sick and almost died. My wife got married to another man.”
A man, Leke Owoyei stated this as part of his evidence at Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, where he brought a divorce suit against his wife, Laide Owoye, on the grounds of desertion.
Leke implored the court to dissolve his union with Laide since she is now married to another man.
He, in addition, pleaded for the custody of the only child produced by their wedlock who is a male.
According to the plaintiff, their child as a male needs his presence and training.
Leke further stated that he was not comfortable having his child raised by another man, that is Laide’s new husband.
Laide acceded to divorce, but refused that Leke had custody of their child.
The plaintiff in his evidence said: “Laide and I started dating in 2006 and got married in 2008.
“Early in our marriage, I discovered that my wife was dating her pastor.
“The wife of this pastor called and informed me of all that went on between her husband and my wife, but my wife denied all the allegations this woman brought against her.
“I took ill a few years after we got married and sought for medical attention in different hospitals to no avail.
“I was incapacitated as a result of this strange ailment for almost two years and had given up hope on living.
“My wife and my parents joined hands in taking care of me. My parents paid through the nose to ensure that I lived, but my condition got worse.
“My wife believing that I would soon die, started displaying a kind of disaffection towards me. She gradually became cold and withdrawn in her attitude.
“Laide started complaining and neglected me.
“One day she confronted my parents and told them she could no longer meet with the demands of taking care of a sick husband.
“My parents pleaded with her to endure the trying moment, but she was resolute.
“Laide deserted me when I needed her most. She abandoned me and took our only child along with her.
“Suddenly my health started to improve and I grew stronger by the day.
“My health was finally restored and I sought to have my wife back, but to my disappointment, she had got married to another man.
“She was blunt. She told me she was no longer interested in me.
“I felt let down, and lost interest in the institution called marriage after then.
“My lord, I am now ready to move on with my life. I want to take another wife which is the reason I came to court.
“I, in addition, pray for the custody of our only child who is a male.
“I have never shirked my responsibility towards him since his mother took him away from me.
“I pay for his feeding, clothing, education and health service.
“In fact, I have just enrolled him for a vocational training of his choice. He would be empowered before he returns to school for a new session.
“My lord, I want to raise my child by myself, I do not wish that another man bring up my child while I am still alive.”
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case till October 23.
