The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has initiated a three-month marketable vocational training programme for no fewer than 50 youths across the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State.

The Director-General of NDE, Abubakar Fikpo, who spoke while flagging off the training in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said the exercise was under the agency’s Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (B-NOAS).

Represented by the state coordinator, Sanusi Akeem, the DG explained that the agency was determined to fulfil its core mandates of reducing the unemployment rate, especially among youths, and eradicating poverty in the country.

He stated that the beneficiaries in the course of the 90-day training would be exposed to vocations such as catering, fashion designing, and shoe and bag making, among others, under competent teachers.

The DG added that the youths, after the training, would earn their living and contribute to the socio-economic development of the state and the country at large, “instead of waiting for non-existent white-collar jobs.”

According to him, “the Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (B-NOAS) is aimed at training and engaging young school-leavers and other classes of Nigerian youths in marketable vocational skills under highly competent trainers to curb societal crimes and youth restiveness occasioned by youth unemployment.

“It is also to enable our youths to contribute towards the development of the socio-economic aspects of Ekiti in particular and, on a broader scale, enhance attraction and opportunities for foreign exchange earnings for the nation.

“You are fortunate to be among the 50 beneficiaries recruited across all 3 Senatorial Districts of Ekiti State, covering catering, fashion design, make-up and gel, shoe and bag making, furniture making, and hairdressing. The training will last for 3 months.”

He called on the beneficiaries to be steadfast and committed to the training, encouraging them “to learn and gain expertise in your chosen skill and be your own master.”

The DG disclosed that the stipend for each of the trainees has been increased from N2,000 to N5,000 per month as a way of encouraging the beneficiaries during the period of the training.
