The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has cautioned against government interference in the affairs of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Veron Mosengo-Omba, CAF General Secretary, said although the government funds the national teams, it must not involve itself in the management of the GFA.

He explained that interfering in the affairs of the GFA is dangerous and advised the government to stay off.

This follows a standoff between the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports over who to appoint as the Black Stars’ next head coach following the sacking of Milovan Rajevac.

The Black Stars of Ghana will play Nigeria in a crucial 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs in March 2022

A replacement has not been named for Rajevac, who was sacked after a poor outing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The GFA favours Otto Addo, who assisted Rajevac at the AFCON in Cameroon, while the government will prefer ex-Newcastle and Brighton manager, Chris Houghton.

“Ghana has to concentrate on the World Cup, they have an important match and they have to concentrate on this. Everybody has to be behind the Black Stars because they’ve an important game coming up in March,” Mosengo-Omba was quoted by 3news as saying.

“To lose the game, to lose the cup is part of football. Ghana was eliminated [in the AFCON] and this is the rule of the game. The government, financially, put the fund for them to prepare for the competition, that I have to thank the Government of Ghana on behalf of CAF President, thank you very much and this is the way of cooperation we want for our members and the government.

“The money that the government put forward for the Black Stars, the government has to check with the GFA how you spend each penny, they’ve to do that, we encourage them to do that but the redline is the government can’t be involved in the management of the federation.

“Even if they lose you can’t say change the management. You’ve to change the coach. This will be very dangerous. we don’t want to come back on that again because this looks like interference. I beg the government that if this is the intention, stop it,” he added.
