Forty-eight hours after suspected cult members reportedly hacked Higher National Diploma (HND) I students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, to death, security agencies in the state are yet to make any arrests on the incident.

Security agencies, as well as the management of the institution, which confirmed that they had commenced investigations on the matter, said that they had launched a manhunt for the masterminds of the attack.

It was also gathered that operatives of the state police command had been deployed into the ancient town in an attempt to arrest the perpetrators of the acts before they fled from the area.

This is just as apprehension and anxiety enveloped the ancient town of Offa over the incident, while residents, especially the student population, lived in fear.

The Tribune gathered that a group of suspected student cultists in the polytechnic hacked to death two students, a yet-to-be-identified male student and a female student, Miss Toyin Bamidele of the Faculty of Food Science and Technology.

The deceased male student said to have been macheted to death within the school vicinity, was also said to be the leader of a cult group.

On the other hand, the deceased female student, Toyin Bamidele, was said to be the girlfriend of the leader of a rival cult group.

“Toyin’s boyfriend couldn’t be found, and she was trailed to her girlfriend’s residence in town, where she was hacked to death.

“Toyin was washing her clothes at her residence located at Dampson Hostel, located along the Atari area of the mini-campus of the institution, Thursday night when the assailants came and mauled her to death”, a source in the ancient town said.

It was also gathered that the remains of the two late students had been deposited at the mortuary of the General Hospital, Offa, for autopsy.

Sources said that the killings of the two students might not be unconnected with the popular “sign out” ceremony in the nation’s tertiary institutions where students celebrate the end of their academic session, which had reportedly been turned into a cult war among rival cult groups.

In a telephone discussion with the PRO of the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ayoola Michael, on Saturday afternoon, he said that the command was already looking into the matter, adding that no arrest had been made.

Meanwhile, authorities of the institution have condoled with the families of Miss Toyin Bamidele in a statement issued by the acting Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mrs Folake Oyinloye, titled Investigation Going On To Reveal Murderers Of Female Students Allegedly Hacked To Death.

“The management received with rude shock the sad news of Miss Toyin Bamidele, a HND 1 Food Technology student, who was allegedly hacked to death in her rented apartment on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

“The management condemns this inhumane act in strong terms, as it is strange in the Polytechnic community.

“While the circumstances behind the incident remain unknown, investigations are currently ongoing to reveal the identity of the evil occurrence by the appropriate security agencies and, as a matter of urgency, to fish out the culprits.

“Her demise is an irreparable loss to the entire management and staff of the polytechnic. The management somberly condoles with her family, friends, and the Department of Food Technology for the great loss and urges anyone who has useful information on this occurrence to report to security agents.

“The management prays to God to repose her soul, grant her eternal rest, and uphold her family to bear the loss”.
