The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, (ODIEC) has disclosed that the commission would conduct the local government election in the State on December 16, 2023.

The Chairman of ODIEC, Dr Joseph Aremo, who disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, the state capital, said the commission would commence the process of the election.

According to Aremo, the commission had kick-started the process of the election by issuing 360 days’ notice for the conduct of the election to political parties and other stakeholders.

The ODIEC boss said in order to ensure that democracy does not suffer at the grassroots, the commission has issued guidelines to stakeholders on the conduct of the forthcoming council election.

He said the commission is expecting interested registered political parties to obtain forms at no cost from ODIEC.

The ODIEC Chairman said the commission has issued forms EC009A, EC009B, EC009C, EC009D, EC009E for the positions of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and Councilors to stakeholders.

He maintained that the conduct of party primaries shall be observed by the commission as part of its statutory responsibilities from April 10 to June 10, 2023.

Aremo noted that campaigns by political parties will commence by July 17 to midnight of December 14, 2023, in compliance with the electoral law.

He commended the state government for supporting and empowering the commission, stressing that the commission is poised to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

The ODIEC Administrative Secretary, Mr Igbekele Jatuwase in his remark, stressed the importance of grassroots governance in Democratic dispensation with reference to Ondo state.

One of the stakeholders and the Chairman, Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, Sir David Ologun said the commission has shown its readiness and preparedness for the conduct of the local government election in the state, urging stakeholders to reciprocate to ODIEC gesture.
