Johnson Babajide – Makurdi

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has directed the lifting of the ban on motorcycles in the Sankera axis of the state.

This was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur on Tuesday saying, ‘the lifting of the ban takes immediate effect.’

It will be recalled that Ortom had in March 2021 announced the ban on Toyota Corolla old model known in the state as ‘duck yanch’ mostly used for transportation in the state and motorcycles in Sankera axis: Ukum and Katsina-Ala Logo LGAs due to activities of criminals in the area.

Ikyur said in the statement that. the directive was in consonance with the judgment of the High Court of Justice, Gboko which had set aside the order of the Benue State Security Council to ban the use of motorcycles in the Sankera axis of the state as a way of curtailing the rise of crime in the area.

The statement read in parts, “Governor Ortom maintained that as a government that believes in the rule of law and due process, his administration was bound to revert its action.

“The action of the Security Council followed the continued use of the motorcycles by criminals and bandits in the area to wreak havoc on their communities which led to the destruction of the rural economy, social and political life of the area.
