The Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima, on Monday swore in 15 new magistrates, as part of efforts to enhance service delivery in the state and curb situations where a magistrate presides over more than one magisterial district.

According to her, the Oyo State Magistracy has over time suffered a shortfall in its number as there are only 19 Magistrates presiding in the various Magistrates Courts spread over all the Magisterial Districts within the state with one magistrate presiding over more than one Magistrate Court.

She added that with the appointment of more qualified legal practitioners as Magistrates, she is confident that the judicial arm of government would be many steps closer to responding adequately to its statutory responsibilities aggressively and satisfy the common man who is constantly looking to it as the bastion of the people.

“This will go a long way to fast track the dispensation of Justice, thus ensuring that Justice is not only done but seen as done to all and sundry. It is pertinent to appreciate the indispensability of an independent judiciary to good governance, good neighbourliness and the protection of the helpless. It also speaks cogently to the virtues of judicial integrity and boldness which is expected of any judicial officer privileged to serve on the lower bench.

“All hands in the Judiciary are on deck and we are committed to promoting a level of excellence always; in view of this I charge you newly appointed Magistrates to hit the ground running immediately in order to bring the Magistracy on the fast track in the quick dispensation of justice. After all Justice delayed is Justice denied,” she said.

“As Magistrates, you hold a vital role within our judicial system. You are the first point of contact for many individuals seeking justice, and you have the power to shape lives and communities through the decisions you make. With this great power comes an even greater responsibility. It is essential that you exercise your authority with fairness, impartiality, honour and utmost integrity.

“Remember that the scales of justice are balanced, and it is your duty to ensure that they remain so. Treat each case that comes before you with the utmost care and consideration, regardless of its magnitude. Each decision you make has the potential to impact the lives of those involved, and it is your responsibility to uphold the principles of justice and protect the rights of all individuals who enter your courtroom,” she said.

The new magistrates are: Adebola Adedoyin, Olasumbo Kudirat, Raji Oluwaferanmi Ayomide, Adelabu Olajumoke Victoria, Rufus Adeoluwa, Ige Oladipupo and Jimoh Kazeem.

Others are, Amin Aminat, Adebiyi Aderemi, Atanda Moyosore, Fasasi Kabirat, Oladele Gladys, Ayanfe Kaosarat, Tolani Sofiat and Macus Omolara.
